My new Ram 2500 diesel has active noise canceling and is the quietest ICE vehicle I’ve ever been in. Probably quieter than electric vehicles at high speeds.

- sjg007 6y agoNot to people outside your truck though..

- cylon13 6y agoThat claim was never made, and you don’t know enough about the poster’s needs and circumstances to criticize their vehicle choice in general.
- mattmaroon 6y agoIt’s a little on the quiet side for a 3/4 ton truck on the outside. But obviously not going to beat a Tesla in that regard.
- dghughes 6y agoCommon rail diesels are very quiet compared to older style diesel engines. Some are so quiet you wouldn't even know it was a diesel. And with DEF you won't even smell the classic diesel exhaust smell. The loud smelling ones are due to modifications and probably also from "deleting" the DEF (which is illegal).
- mattmaroon 6y agoIt’s relatively quiet but still has that distinctive diesel sound. It’s the latest Cummins 6.7 and for something that puts out almost 400hp it’s pretty quiet. I’m fairly sensitive to noise so between that and the ANC I’m pretty happy.
- sjg007 6y agoA large majority of these trucks get a delete installed. Numerous folks roll coal. In states without emissions control it’s a giant cluster.
- mattmaroon 6y agoI really doubt it’a a large majority.

- ngneer 6y agoIs it quiet on the outside too?
- mattmaroon 6y agoFor a 3/4 ton truck, yes. Compared to a small car, no.
- bradlys 6y agoI’m sure most of the noise will come from the size/type of the vehicle (air displacement and styling) and tires. Truck tires are not known for being particularly quiet. The larger the tread, the worse the noise...
- mattmaroon 6y agoYeah they’re also very poor in terms of aerodynamics by necessity. A tonneau cover helps more than you might think!
- MrsPeaches 6y agoCan you switch it off/on to hear the difference? Would be interested to know the difference perceived. Are there any other cars that do this?
- mattmaroon 6y agoI wish because I’m curious. You have to buy some aftermarket hardware for that. And yes. Mostly luxury cars ATM but it’s growing.
- kindall 6y agoAcura RL was one of the first to have active nose cancellation, in 2005.
- the__alchemist 6y agoApparently electric vehicles like Tesla are noisy on the highway, where external noises dominate; due to less sound-deadening material to save weight.
- mattmaroon 6y agoI’ve noticed that.
- davewritescode 6y agoCan confirm, the Model3 is not a wonderful place to be at 80 MPH. Wind a tire noise is embarrassingly bad for a car that can be optioned out to $60k.
- dannyw 6y agoThey are finally upgrading to double glazed windows on post-October models. Noise is only a little bit better. It’s still embarrassing.
- ben-schaaf 6y agoWhat what I've heard the ID3 actually has more sound-deadening than normal and the LEAF's mirrors were designed to cause less wind noise.
- calvinmorrison 6y agoThat's an absolutely feature. Road noise is a big fatigue on bikes and older loud cars.
