Electric cars will probably save the grid nearterm, with people wanting the convenience of charging overnight at home. Eventually all carparks will be equipped with solar powered charging, which will allow people to use their cars as backup power packs. Long term, solar/battery economics will eventually make the cost of maintaining the grid too expensive. Governments will try and mandate against it, but that will only last so long.
