Erlang made a fundamentally good design decision in reinventing the Actor paradigm [Hewitt, Bishop, and Steiger 1973]. However, many of the language design decisions were compromised. It's amazing that Armstrong, et. al. got as far as they did without formal foundational principles. Unfortunately, Erlang still lacks a rigorous formal foundation :-(
