I wonder if this was related to a kernel panic bug I ran into in Chrome around the same time! Long story short, we were using a library (Modernizr) on our web product that checked for some kind of OpenGL support that we didn't actually need, and just running that code would trigger a driver bug. Disabling that fixed it!
