Windows 3.x ran OK with 1MB of RAM if you only used a couple of applications at the same time. It wasn't the fastest thing and swapped a lot but it was usable for Word, Excel and the like, as long as you stuck to contemporary versions, as later ones tended to be more memory-hungry.
