I don't think the vaccines are really relevant if it genuinely is 1.7x more contagious. There's no way of getting enough vaccine supplies before we reach herd immunity through normal infection. Even with the current measures we're at ~R=1, so... At best we might have time to protect the oldest people and limit the number of deaths.
