Ask HN: Page takeover ads on mainstream news sites
When did this become a thing. Obviously Ad-Blockers are limited in iOS safari but when this happens it’s an instant close and I never will visit your site again. Latest one was Newsweek. Straight to the garbage bin forever.
- mimixco 6y agoAlso, ad loading causes the page to shift around all the time while you're reading it. Many big sites have become unusable because of this. I should point out WeTransfer here for doing the opposite. Their background ads are full screen, often video, and don't distract from what you're trying to do (upload a file). Nicely done.
- bartvk 6y agoI use the No, Thanks extension to remove this crap. It's a paid extension, but to me, that's worth it. The usual ad blockers remove a lot of this stuff, but this extension even removes all sorts of annoying newsletter popups. https://www.no-thanks-extension.com/ https://www.no-thanks-extension.com/
