Building an antilibrary: the power of unread books
- rendx 6y agoIt is interesting how this topic comes up every once in a while here ( https://hn.algolia.com/?q=antilibrary https://hn.algolia.com/?q=antilibrary ), and there is a number of VERY similar blog posts around, even some short articles in larger magazines. But for years now, while it is an interesting and relevant topic, it seems like everyone is just copying the same article, using the same references to Umberto Eco and Nassim Taleb. Here are just some, from the first pages of hits on a search engine for "antilibary". All of them very similar: https://www.brainpickings.org/2015/03/24/umberto-eco-antilibrary/ https://www.brainpickings.org/2015/03/24/umberto-eco-antilib... https://nesslabs.com/antilibrary https://nesslabs.com/antilibrary https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/columns/the-antilibrary-and-the-value-of-unread-books/article27109080.ece https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/columns/the-antilibrary-and... https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/jun/26/umberto-eco-antilibrary-oliver-burkeman https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/jun/26/umberto... https://medium.com/@suleymankoc/umberto-eco-on-unread-books-in-a-personal-library-d4d3d69d25eb https://medium.com/@suleymankoc/umberto-eco-on-unread-books-... Kevin Mims seems to have introduced/applied the Japanese term "Tsundoku" to this "antilibrary idea": https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/08/books/review/personal-libraries.html https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/08/books/review/personal-lib... https://www.bbc.com/news/world-44981013 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-44981013 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsundoku https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsundoku
