Dozens sue Amazon's Ring after camera hack leads to threats and racial slurs
- crmrc114 6y agoYou know, I have eight ring cams. My login is protected with 2fa. I have no pity for someone who uses stupid passwords, then wants to sue because they were to lazy to secure their account. Honestly Ring should just force people to enable 2fa so we don't have to see one of these FUD articles every six months.
- justinclift 6y agoFrom the article: However, as the lawsuit alleges, Ring was hacked in 2019 – meaning the stolen credentials from that breach may have been used to get into users’ cameras. That means the hacks that Ring has allegedly blamed on customers may have been caused by Ring itself. So putting it down to "dumb users doing dumb things" seems pretty wrong.
- crmrc114 6y agoI call bs as there has been no confirmed hack. Just because some reporter at the guardian and some attorney claims there was a hack does not mean there was one. Ring has consistency said these users were reusing passwords that had been compromised. Again I think the solution is to mandate 2fa. The same way laws had to be put in place to force router manufacturers to stop defaulting to open ssids with no kind of encryption.
- xaedes 6y agoLets put an internet connected camera in my home. What could happen?
- unphased 6y agoHi. Sorry, this is a total non sequitur, but I was trawling my comment history and saw your reply to my comment. HN doesn't let me respond to a 60 day old comment, so... here I am, I found you somewhere else! You mentioned "infinte pan zoom graph based window manager" as part of your response. Thanks, I think you totally got what I meant. I agree that it's essentially an OS scale problem to solve and I'd be chipping away at it endlessly (and that's if I have my way!). But I do believe the AR revolution is coming and it will wash over us like a tsunami and make the recent smartphone revolution look like a fad. I think we don't already have this kind of software yet because endless 3D graph-connected space is potentially clunky to explore on tablet/display. It's already a foregone conclusion to me that this barrier will be obliterated by XR and it will be deeply intuitive and liberating to move beyond 2D interfaces. We actually must move beyond 2D interfaces in order to even reasonably support visual cues of dynamic relations. Only when your structures are represented as nodes in a shared context can you allow users to manipulate relationships between arbitrary things.
