Ask HN: Has anyone hired a coach to learn a particular skill? was it worth it?
Anything from targeted technical topics (computational biology, for example) to dating skills - specifically one-on-one.
How was the experience? Was it worth it?
- breck 6y agoOh yeah do this all the time. One on one or small groups. In the past it was a potpourri of things like piano, deep learning, surfing, dancing, etc. Nowadays with a kid it's things like cpr, swaddling, etc. One thing I have never, ever thought: "I wish I spent less time/less money paying for all those in person classes and lessons." Now if only I can figure out how to get my daughter to learn this lesson before she's 30.
- akudha 6y agoYou hired a coach to learn deep learning? Was it one-on-one? Also, for CPR, was it a group class?
- breck 6y agodeep learning in terms of classes I did a number of things. i did an online udemy class but met in person with some people from a local Meetup.com. then I joined a few kaggle teams and learned from folks there. then i paid a decent amount of money to get some facetime directly with leading experts. then i knew enough to just talk with experts on my own for free. cpr was a group class at a local hospital. we do a lot of those types of parenting things. actually pretty fun!
