Ask HN: What facial cues do you miss with masked interactions?
I can’t read faces anymore. I did not realize how much I relied on ‘face reading’ not just to make quick character judgements but also for lie detection, trust level factoring and just overall evaluation.
I don’t know if I am alone in this or if others are also struggling with masked interactions? Especially for first meetings.
- eecks 6y agoI am generally not meeting anyone face to face except for family members with masks on so it hasn't been an issue.
- joshxyz 6y agoI'd say my years of experience dating women with resting bitch face prepared me for this. But kidding aside imo you're right, masks kinda covers a lot of social cues and our reduced face to face time with other people (i guess) kinda makes us a bit more rusty when it comes to picking up other non-verbal social cues
- jelliclesfarm 6y agoi have only seen 'resting bitch face' as memes. is it the same as 'poker face'? one could still get a lot from the face. which side is sunburnt, eye make up...teeth, hair around the ears, grooming, make up colours, jewelery.. people cant help it..sneers, smiles, twitches, tics, eye blinking, eye brow raises especially touching the face. its the most important clue to when someone is nervous or hiding something or lying etc. touching eyes, nose, face. now nobody touches their face!
