I dunno, I've been at this for 6 years with Rails, am running a 4 year old mbp that dogs it with Java stuff but hangs in ust fine with Ruby. Maybe my apps aren't nearly as huge as the ones you're loading, but I've done some large ones. But I share your frustrations re: "metawhare" :) Solution is just to hang around with responsible devs.
