- KoftaBob 6y agoI don't mind that when the industries they're expanding into are uncompetitive and controlled by a small # of incumbents. When companies with the resources of a FAANG enter industries like that, they're able to make it price competitive quickly. For example, what Netflix did to the cable industry.
- FireBeyond 6y agoAnd now my Netflix is almost at $20/month. And $12/month for Hulu. What about Disney+? Peacock? HBO Max? Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
- lotsofpulp 6y agoIt’s not the same from my experience. Before, I needed to spend at least a couple hundred dollars (usually on a contract spending an hour on the phone to cancel) on one vendor, who may or may not have the content I want, and it may or may not be available at the time I want it. Now, I can pick and choose exactly what I want, when I want it, and without advertising breaks. Obviously, if you want everything, then you have to pay for everything. All with a few clicks. Definitely not the same.
- yazaddaruvala 6y agoI pay for Netflix and HBO Max, and my friends (sorry "my family") use them. I don't pay for Disney+ or Hulu, but I use my friend's (sorry "family's") account. Additionally, canceling any of these services is trivial, and I can stagger them month by month if I wanted.
- hobby-coder-guy 6y agoAnd no commercials
- FireBeyond 6y agoAnd? I can pirate movies and TV shows, too. I'm not sure how this changes my point.
- yazaddaruvala 6y agoPoint is that cable was stuck to a single household. Streaming is cheaper than cable because we can use it across a few households. Amortize costs down 2x-3x, on top of the fact that added up all these subscriptions still cost 20-30% less than cable. This is just an extra bonus on the easy to cancel aspect, and the no ads aspect. I think longer term you’ll see the Kickstarter/Patreon model for streaming be the final evolution of the Cable to Streaming transition. Which is likely what you’re still waiting for.
- FireBeyond 6y ago> Streaming is cheaper than cable because we can use it across a few households. Amortize costs down 2x-3x, on top of the fact that added up all these subscriptions still cost 20-30% less than cable. You're literally saying "streaming is cheaper if I cheat/pirate/break the TOS". Cable/satellite are even cheaper if you buy a pirate smartcard too, so we're not really making a fair comparison, are we?
- oblio 6y agoThey need it, I'm not sure if we, the rest of humanity, need them to.

- remir 6y agoWhat FAANGs need to do, IMO, is to take their massive wealth and start thinking about some solutions to solve humanity's very urgent problems.
- bufferoverflow 6y agoElectric cars is a part of the solution.
- timbit42 6y agoFirst world problem.
- dternyak 6y agoIf I was a shareholder of FAANG (I'm not), I wouldn't be very excited about them taking on very unprofitable tasks like solving humanity's urgent problems.
- _underfl0w_ 6y agoTherein lies the problem, frankly.
