"the auto industry made it a crime", I mean, we hear lots of allegations that USA is actually ruled by corporations but was this crime not established as such by elected officials in an elected institution?
Jaywalking is a ridiculous "crime", no doubt. But let's not go blame some abstract group (auto industry) for democratic society's failure.
- mulmen 6y agoWell the crime was democratically instituted in a world where the "abstract group" literally bought up all the public transit they could and then shut it down to create more drivers. Who then vote.
- klyrs 6y agoOnly, the history of this is well documented. The auto industry consists of auto manufacturers, dealerships, and their lobbyists. Here's a couple of articles that are more specific: https://www.vox.com/2015/1/15/7551873/jaywalking-history https://www.vox.com/2015/1/15/7551873/jaywalking-history https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26073797 https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26073797 And, yes. Politicians are complicit in this too.
- njharman 6y agoLet’s not blame abstract group/process “democratic society” when it’s clear that a concrete commercial organization, the auto industry, had profit motive to advertise and lobby for favorable PR and legislation.
