I don't understand how come after all these years there is no rule when discussing salaries in terms of gross vs net.
Net Berlin 60k EUR is probably more than 100k USD gross.
And as far as I'm aware, 100k USD gross is median salary in the US.
Net Berlin 100k EUR is probably around gross 200k USD in the US.
- acjacobson 6y agoMost people that I see discussing salaries (in Germany or in the US) use gross as the default. In rare cases I hear people use net, but mostly this is those starting out / student workers. I assume the OP means 100k gross. 100k gross in Berlin is above average.
- yuribro 6y agoThere is an implicit rule: Everyone talk about gross. Including the OP. Salaries for developers are in the 60-80K EUR gross in DE[0] The US median gross is <40K USD [1] and for software developers it is close to 100K USD (probably much higher is SV and major tech hubs, and much lower everywhere else) [2] [0] https://teleport.org/cities/berlin/#salaries https://teleport.org/cities/berlin/#salaries [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_income_in_the_United_States https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_income_in_the_United_... - ThePhysicist 6y agoNet income varies a lot depending on your tax class. If you're single without kids 60T€ yields about 2.900 € per month, I think.
- y42 6y agoIt's not only tax class, that impacts your net income. There's a lot more to take into account when calculating your net income. You got children? Distance to your working place, even working from home reduces your tax load. 100k gross can range between 50 and 75k net.
