We can debate how the monthly fee factors in, but to keep it simple let's just compare apples to apples - the free gumroad plan. For the free plan (https://gumroad.com/features/pricing https://gumroad.com/features/pricing), Gumroad takes 5% and charges a (3.5% + 30c) payment processing fee.
The 5X is in terms of the "take" percentage (1% vs 5%).
