Fantastic article. As an Indian American, I’ve seen people go to great lengths in order to fit in with white America and distance themselves from other minorities. Like the author says, in the early years of Indian immigration, these efforts were necessary for survival. Today, though, I think a lot of Indian Americans don’t really have a reason to continue. Yet we have, and now we seem to think that it’s a virtue. The article is an interesting peek behind the curtain.
- underseacables 6y agoI contend that society will naturally segregate if left to its own devices. Assimilation is an ideal, but it’s not a natural occurrence.
- kabirgoel 6y agoAgreed. Assimilation takes effort on both sides. What I mean is that immigrants no longer have to renounce their identity in order to fit in in a lot of America. Nor should they.
