The TG-16/PC-Engine is a pretty cool mid-step between 8 and 16 bit consoles. It was super popular in japan but wasn't really in the west (Released too late maybe?)
I REALLY like it's wavetable synth sound. For whatever reason, wavetable and Yamaha synths were never too popular over here whereas they were super common in the east (Especially Yamaha synths. TONS of home computers had them)
- wk_end 6y agoI’m not sure where in the West you - I know the Amiga was big in Europe and used a sampler - but in North America Yamaha FM synths were huge. The DX7 is all over 80s pop music, the Sega Genesis had a Yamaha YM2612 in it, and most PC gamers were listening to FM synth music via Adlib and Sound Blaster cards (Yamaha OPL chips) until the mid-90s or so.
