Plants can be larks or night owls just like us
- supernova87a 6y agoI have an odd plant that work sent us as a gift during lockdown -- it spreads its leaves as if waking up only when dark, which is totally opposite from what I would've expected. This might prompt me to observe it a bit more instead of letting it die of neglect!
- platz 6y ago"Prayer Plants" all do this; it's called nyctinasty. Usually it's plants in the Maranta or Calathea family. There are several theories why they do it, such as water retention or discouraging predation, but they don't really know for sure.
- Melting_Harps 6y agoNight blooming jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum), which is not really a jasmine at all but a nightshade like tomatoes and eggplants. Succlants also continue into the night unlike most day only foiliage based photosynthetic plants. Plants are incredibly intelligent, diverse and have had way more time to adapt to just about every condition imaginable in their nearly billion year History (~500 million years but keeps getting pushed further back). So, its not surprise to see these observations.
