Ask HN: What if Jupiter(or any other celestial body in space) is a computer?
- anigbrowl 6y agoWhat if it's just a printer for making smaller planets? c'mon, riff on the idea a little.
- jelliclesfarm 6y agoMaybe we are all living inside a simulation Planet Jupiter is running...and when it runs out of power, poof! We are gone!
- jelliclesfarm 6y agoWould the smaller planets have to be clones?
- anigbrowl 6y agoI don't see why. They could do small rocky planets, even take commissions from special customers. But I was hoping to hear more about your idea.
- jelliclesfarm 6y agoClearly..you have mistaken me for someone who is smart. Like this guy’s bit on planetary brains...The ‘Jupiter Brain’ https://youtu.be/Rmb1tNEGwmo https://youtu.be/Rmb1tNEGwmo .. But why stretch it that far..why not make Jupiter itself a computer. Who are we to imagine that intelligent life has to resemble Homo sapiens? In Indian astrology, Jupiter is teacher..the keeper and distributor of all kinds of wisdom. Venus is his colleague and peer..Venus is also a teacher but while Jupiter is guru of the gods..Venus is the guru of the demons. They could be planetary computers running earth simulations. Just saying. If astral energy and planets can affect our lives and this can be seen through our horoscopes based on the time and place of our birth, we could all just be snippets of code. Distributed processing between 5 planets, sun, moon and the two (imaginary) lunar nodes. That’s what I want to believe.
- anigbrowl 6y agoI really like this idea and would encourage you to pursue it, perhaps in a fictional context. You don't need to have all the answers to produce good science fiction, just a willingness to explore what the implications of something might be. You could also explore the idea from the perspective of people who believe in astrology but have not yet been conditioned to think of a computer as an everyday object.
- jelliclesfarm 6y agothanks for the encouragement. perhaps 2021 will be the year. i will update/announce when i have something to share!
- yongjik 6y agoAnd the Earth is a replacement toner?
- jelliclesfarm 6y agoMercury is the clone of the Moon..obvi. https://education.seattlepi.com/surfaces-moon-mercury-similar-4627.html https://education.seattlepi.com/surfaces-moon-mercury-simila... Have you compared the pictures of the moon and Mercury. Tough to tell them apart.
- gregjor 6y agoDoes it have USB-C? Dark mode? Jupiter is older than Rust and React, I think, so it probably runs some horrible legacy code like COBOL or PHP.
- apengwin 6y agoAlways has been.
- jelliclesfarm 6y agoThere was also this star trek episode..the original..where a group of women steal spock’s brain and installs him as a computer on a planet where men and women cannot get along. He becomes the ‘controller’ and Bones had to rescue Spock and put his brain back. Fun times.
