In the late 1990s I was a cdrom developer and at the time I really couldn't see far ahead at all to the day that the web would get so fast that a cdrom is a useless artifact. At the present time most of the entire web is as fast as a fast DVD drive for me. By 2003 interest in cdrom media was dying and I couldn't even bother to notice it happening. Then by 2005 it couldn't be more clear.
It takes a lot of adaption to move along and do anything with computers as a career. Things change and might change in directions we can't predict.
I agree that something could come along to replace the web as we know it. It just has to have the right combination of easier, faster, and cheaper. Security would be good to have too. It's getting nasty out here.
