- nikolay 6y agoThat's not how the MacBook is called though. Here's the trade name: https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/13-inch https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/13-inch
- macintux 6y agoM1 is an implementation of Apple Silicon. I’m really not sure what you’re trying to argue here.
- nikolay 6y agoShow me the source of your statement coming from Apple! Apple says M1 is a SoC, i.e. it's a chip most of all. Calling it a "silicon" is like calling your credit card "plastic".
- macintux 6y agoI still don't know what you're disputing, so I'm not quite sure what to cite. The initial presentation announcing the transition this summer was replete with references to "Apple silicon". Here's the first press release about the new line of chips: https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2020/06/apple-announces-mac-transition-to-apple-silicon/ https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2020/06/apple-announces-mac-t... Besides the fact that it's in the title, here's a snippet from the press release: > Apple today also introduced macOS Big Sur...includes technologies that will ensure a smooth and seamless transition to Apple silicon. Developers can easily convert their existing apps to run on Apple silicon... Including the title, the word "silicon" appears 16 times. 13 of those occurrences are part of the phrase "Apple silicon". Tim Cook: > Today we’re announcing our transition to Apple silicon
- nikolay 6y agoYes, and if you read outside of the title (which is in title case), it's Apple silicon everywhere else. If it was a trade name, it would have been "Apple Silicon" instead.
- macintux 6y agoYes, you're right. Apple silicon does not show up on Apple's list of trademarks: https://www.apple.com/legal/intellectual-property/trademark/appletmlist.html https://www.apple.com/legal/intellectual-property/trademark/... I'm sure the author should be properly mortified to have used Apple's verbiage to describe Apple's computer without consulting the trademark list.
- nikolay 6y agoI do like things to be called with their proper names and capitalization. I really get pissed when people refer to GitHub as "Github" or to WordPress as "Wordpress". It's Opsgenie, not "OpsGenie" or "Ops Genie", as well. I also think the profanization of calling a SoC or a CPU a "silicon" is like the "plastic" example I referred to. Let's not be lazy when referring to things.
