I've used this tool fairly often, it will generate the code you need to center based on your browser requirements, etc http://howtocenterincss.com/ http://howtocenterincss.com/ I basically only use flexbox now, but even flexbox does some really stupid things I don't get. Like if you want one element to go against the parent's rules of say, aligning left, you set the left margin of the object you want going right to "auto" which will push it and every object after it right. But this can create some annoying problems.
