I wonder if the extra decoupling caps for the CPU and PPU are even necessary? I get that good decoupling is important but these things worked fine as designed

I wonder if the extra decoupling caps for the CPU and PPU are even necessary? I get that good decoupling is important but these things worked fine as designed for the decades they were being manufactured.
