I'm not sure why, but I always saw these purifiers as some wacky pseudo-science, like the stuff that you see on tv late at night or early morning with all kind of D list celebrities promoting amazing very specific pans and sponges that soak up viruses.
How can a tiny box the size of a laptop, or even smaller, properly filter and recirculate all the air in a room. Maybe I'm missing something, but it just seems unbelievable. To get proper airflow in buildings, it takes a lot of money, planning and equipment, I just don't get these things, maybe someone can chip in and explain how such a small device can properly filter the air in a normal room.

The filters are very big, air intake is fully covered by 50x30cm of HEPA and carbon filters, stacked on each other. The humidifier is just a tank for water and a floating piece of plastic in it. That piece of plastic has another large "filter", that is soaking in that water. All air flows through it at all times. Very simple construction but also efficiency is pretty impressive. Still - it's a device to be used in a medium room, like 12-15 square metres. Above that it would not be as effective, for instance in a large office space this would be way to small. If you have a tiny box then it must but loud as hell :)
- cassianoleal 6y agoWhat you seem to be missing is the fact that air purifiers are a lot larger than a laptop. I have one sitting next to me on the floor that's 32x32x56cm. It's the size of a medium-large rubbish bin, and it needs 30cm clearance around it. This is one meant for a small room, and you're supposed to keep the room closed to improve efficiency, otherwise the air exchange with the rest of the house or the outside more or less defeats its purpose. What I find really lacking is an efficient way to deal with VOCs. These air filters seem to be really good at clearing out particles and microparticles from the air but even with a good deal with activated carbon they don't seem to do much for VOCs, which I suspect is the main issue indoors.
