I know they are almost exclusively a racing game maker now, but the Codemasters (published) game I’ll never forget is the war sim Operation Flashpoint. It wasn’t necessarily an amazing game, but it was an amazing sandbox. The sheer variety of vehicles you could drive/pilot and activities you could do with no objective was unlike any thing I can remember before that.
- AceJohnny2 6y agoI learned recently that Operation Flashpoint was the first of the "open world military sims" that eventually gave rise to the ARMA and DayZ games. SovietWomble (of the hilarious "Random Bullshittery" videos [2]) had a series of videos on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBitIgZ_UvGFNHPFlRg4834gYBmbYmdr7 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBitIgZ_UvGFNHPFlRg48... - topkai22 6y agoYup, the developers of Operation Flashpoint and ARMA are one and the same if I remember correctly (Bohemia Interactive?). I also have to think the Operation Flashpoint influenced other games, like the first Battlefield game, which was released about a year later with a similar crazy variety of roles and vehicles. Although WWII online was of the same area and breadth, so it could have just been the zeitgeist. Edit: And in an amazing tangent, I just found out that WWII Online is still playable and in active development.
- scaladev 6y agoIt didn't "give rise" to Arma, Operation Flashpoint IS Arma. The original OFP has been retrospectively renamed to Arma (1). Arma 2 and 3 are sequels, and as a big fan of the series I can assure you they feel very, very similar, to the extent that Arma 3 has many of the same bugs and quirks I've seen in the original one. I am 99.99% sure they kept the same engine since the 90's, and have been improving it instead of doing complete rewrites. Thank god, because it helps to keep the feel and the atmosphere of the game.
- stereobit 6y agoOFP was the game that got me into scripting/modding and building communities which was pretty much the start of my tech career.
