Goodreads has just generally been "sad" for a very long time. Even before the Amazon acquisition, the site has been slow, hasn't actually innovated in anything, and basically is the equivalent of a late-90s/early-00s craigslist -- a mediocre but "good enough" service which squats on a market preventing better competitors from existing.
- Merman_Mike 6y agoIt kills me to see because Amazon is the entity that could build the best book recommendation engine of all time. And it would help them sell more books!
- Siira 6y agoWhat ideas do you have? I find Goodreads has the features, but its UX is rather old-fashioned.
- Merman_Mike 6y agoI find Goodreads recommendations to be stale. I have ~200 books in my account, all with my personal ratings, but I never seem to get any new recommendations from Goodreads as I add new books. The recommendations I do get are usually just mainstream bestsellers too. I was thinking that with all the data Amazon has about folks (very detailed reading habits from Kindles, for example), they could find people with similar interests to me and recommend the books that those people liked most but that I haven't yet read.
- Siira 6y agoI look at the recommendations for specific books, both on Goodreads and Amazon.com. Admittedly, this could work better if Goodreads just automated this, but I can still find the books that my “clique” enjoys.
