I think people might be more impressed if this idea can be used to make some sort of prediction that standard physics cannot. Einstein explained both Mercury's orbital precession and the bending of light rays. These triumphs validated his theory. I should think that any new physics to overtake Einstein's would need to be not merely equivalent to Einstein's but better.
