Ask HN: Can anyone open their messages on fb mbasic?
I have been using https://mbasic.facebook.com/messages/ as an alternative to the cluttered messenger interface. To the best of my knowledge, it was the only way to read messages without javascript. However, it seems totally broken since a few days ago. I suspect the issue is global as I asked a few friends to confirm they have the same.
Is facebook renouncing to their users who do not have a js capable browser (and a sufficient CPU)?
- azalemeth 6y agoI never knew this site existed. When visiting it, I get > "The page you requested cannot be displayed at the moment. It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may be broken or expired, or you may not have permission to view this page. Back to home" As an aside, is it possible to avoid using the new (worse, fake-iOS-ified) UI?
- Labo333 6y agoYes, I get the same! I was using mbasic on mobile and messenger.com on my desktop. But an update last week made messenger.com very slow on my ARM laptop. I hope it's just a coincidence that messenger.com is updated and mbasic stops working for messages during the same week!
- forgotmypw17 6y agombasic has been unmaintained for a while, in my experience. It is just barely usable, but also has many missing pages. Lately, many links (e.g. group posts) point to m.facebook, which means that I just get redirected to the home page. You may need to access the page by clicking a link from another mbasic page in order to have some kind of checksum in the URL.
- Labo333 6y ago> mbasic has been unmaintained for a while, in my experience. true > Lately, many links (e.g. group posts) point to m.facebook, which means that I just get redirected to the home page. Conversely, in a browser without js, m.facebook.com redirects to mbasic > You may need to access the page by clicking a link from another mbasic page in order to have some kind of checksum in the URL. Good idea! From the main page with the feed, I can see the number of new messages but when I click on the link, I see an error message (same as with direct links).
- forgotmypw17 6y ago>Conversely, in a browser without js, m.facebook.com redirects to mbasic Yep, which means all the links I open in new tabs all take me to the homepage. Worse yet, whatever is in those tabs will likely never be served to me again, so if I don't review them all now, that information is gone. If I wanted to reliably stay on top of friends and groups updates, I'd have to check each page individually.
