DXF is useful as a minimal exchange format; For developers I would recommend a look at OpenNURBS(.3dm):

It's a format as well as C++ implementation that's freely licensed and supports many features over DXF such as 5+ sided solid geometries. This is not possible in DXF without proprietary extensions.
- phkahler 6y agoCan OpenNURBS handle trimmed NURBS surfaces, or read or write STEP files? Another option for OSS developers in this area is to come work on SolveSpace. This one was also missing from the articles list of programs supporting DXF.
