Show HN: Probably the most comprehensive weather API currently available
This was posted before but I'm quite pleased to share a major update for https://oikolab.com.
We now have available seven decades of hourly weather data starting from 1950 for any location in the world, thanks to the recent publication of ERA5 reanalysis data from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). ERA5 is gap-free, gridded dataset generated using data assimilation method (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_assimilation), similar to NWP models but with the benefit of hindsight.
As far as we're aware of, we're the first weather data service provider to have this extensive range of coverage accessible via REST API, where one can quickly query time-series of weather parameters for any location in seconds rather than hours or days from the original source.
Here are some stats:
Coverage: Global, from 1950 to 10 days ahead
Spatial Resolution: 0.25 deg x 0.25 deg (lat x lon)
Temporal Resolution: Hourly
Weather Parameters: ~30, including longwave/shortwave radiation, wetbulb temperature, windspeed at 100m, etc. (https://docs.oikolab.com/#3-weather-parameters)
NetCDF/GRIB Data Size: ~100TB
Data Sources:
Historical (ERA5) - https://www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/datasets/reanalysis-datasets/era5
Forecast (GFS) - https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/data-access/model-data/model-datasets/global-forcast-system-gfs

- arthurcolle 6y agoPassword reset is not working. Sign up is very janky and not very user friendly. Reach out to my email for a more detailed review, I'd love to incorporate weather data in my forecasting systems.
- a_square_peg 6y agoThanks for checking it out - will email you separately. FYI, I use Azure API Gateway to handle user management & sign up and I have to say it's somewhat limiting.
- arthurcolle 6y agoDefinitely would like to talk further, integrate with your service and talk about my uses/requirements. Looks like a lot of work has gone into this so congratulations for building a great product.

- tuanacelik 6y agoNice! I was looking for an API that provides air quality as well as temperature data a while ago for a demo project. Used Air Visual in the end but would you know of any alternative? I realize this one here doesn’t include air quality indexes.
- a_square_peg 6y agoThanks! I've been meaning to add air quality but haven't gotten around to it yet. I saw that Climacell seems to offer an API for this and you can also get raw data from places such as https://atmosphere.copernicus.eu/ https://atmosphere.copernicus.eu/ or NCEP/NOAA.
