As a widespread counterpoint, look at Chrome OS. I’ve never seen any ChromeBook, clear back to the very first CR-48 ever fail on this.
That said, I have a work laptop (HP Elitebook G5) running Ubuntu that wakes and sleeps perfectly. Same situation with Ubuntu on my desktop PC.
- toyg 6y agoIt's easy to make things work when you control both hardware and software.
- chungus_khan 6y agoWhich is also the Apple approach. Mac OS is pretty terrible at sleep and wake on non-Apple hardware, but of course it is, Apple doesn't test against hardware they don't support. In both cases it isn't anything wrong with the Linux or Darwin kernels, it's inconsistent implementations and little manufacturer care.
- sgt 6y agoWhy would Chrome OS be considered an alternative to Linux? The only thing in common seems to be the kernel running somewhere under the hood.
- mikelward 6y agoLast I knew, they did not support hibernate. I understand it's not quite the same thing, but it means you either need to turn it off, or charge it every week, even if you're not using it.
