Content ID goes much beyond what copyright law requires Google to do. Google could simply have no such system and allow rightsholders to find matches on their own, and go through the DMCA process.
Content ID is Google proactively acting in the interests of rightsholders over YouTube creators, presumably so they can have cosy partnerships for music, TV etc.
- Lammy 6y agoYes, which they would not be so compelled to do without the copyright Sword of Damocles hanging over their head.
- anshumankmr 6y agoBut that is preventing Google from being sued into oblivion by the thr record companies, isn't it?
- jazzyjackson 6y agoHow much would it cost to just buy all the record companies I wonder
- advisedwang 6y agoNo, if Google (merely) complied with the DMCA - waiting until notified by a rightsholder and the taking content down - they couldn't be sued.
- GauntletWizard 6y agoThey could still be sued. It would be found to have no standing... but the record labels could and would drag that out for as long as possible, and cost millions in legal fees in the meantime. Google should fight it. It's good for them in the long run, and it's good for society long and short. But they've taken the easier path.
