They own them already. Society has accepted consciously or unconsciously the Like based reward system that now underlies all social dynamics. People in power in all democracies have been propped up by this system. So now it's like watching gamblers trying to regulate a casino or drug addicts trying to take on the cartels. Until the reward system itself is attacked and rethought nothing useful is going to happen.
