Intel, ARM and the Innovators Dilemma
- socialdemocrat 6y agoDo you think Intel and AMD could simply switch to making ARM processor and beat Apple? After all they got more experience in chip design? Why don't they just do that now?
- rsclient 6y agoUgh -- I hate how Medium needs to know who I am before showing me an article. Based on the first sentence, though, this looks like a cool blog post.
- ogre_codes 6y agoYeah, I always end up pasting the link into a private browser window to bypass that.
- ogre_codes 6y agoIntel's massive profit margins on CPUs exists primarily because they have long had a monopoly/ duopoly position in the market. If they transition to ARM, they are on a level playing field with Qualcomm, Nvidia, AMD, and Apple. Intel has a massive incentive to keep Microsoft reliant on x86. If Windows (or Linux even) shifts over to primarily ARM, their ability to extract outsized profits from the industry vanishes over-night. Microsoft on the other hand has massive incentives to get anyone creating high end ARM CPUs to compete with Apple.
- socialdemocrat 6y agoI agree, but there are those who insist that Intel will be fine designing ARM chips and that they will beat Apple because they have such strong experience. And has elaborated in the article, I think that easily becomes a replay of what we have seen in the car industry. Everybody say the big automakers would crush Tesla with their electric vehicles, but it hasn't happened yet.
