Which might also explain why they beat Covid faster and more effectively, on the other hand.
- Kiro 6y agoThey haven't beaten Covid. Their current curve is quickly approaching the spring numbers, expected to hit the February peak next week. https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/12/07/943812120/south-koreas-health-minister-describes-seoul-as-a-covid-19-war-zone?t=1607421588613 https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/1...
- camillomiller 6y agoYou're right, although I'm measuring by EU and US standards. I admit I had more like Vietnam, Taiwan and China in mind, than South Korea, thanks for the link.
- Taek 6y agoDeaths per million in Korea is a factor of 80 lower than in the US. Even if they return to previous highs they are way outperforming the US.
- Kiro 6y agoFor sure but there's a common misconception bundling South Korea together with countries that have actually beaten it, like New Zealand and Vietnam. South Korea is doing great by any Western standard but they haven't beaten it, yet.
- blaser-waffle 6y agoFar lower rates of obesity, better health infrastructure, and a much, much higher willingness to wear masks and defer to the elderly (who are most at risk).
- zelos 6y ago> New cases reported Monday exceeded 600 for the second day in a row, bringing the total to more than 38,000, with about 550 deaths. South Korea's population is around 50 million. Their total deaths from Covid are similar to the daily death rate during the first peak in the UK, a similarly sized Western country.
