They are people, and I feel for the trouble they are in, but no amount of compassion or empathy could convince me to take a stroll through a majority of SF downtown after dark. Likewise with many of the South Bay trails and parks. I don't even go to SF downtown during the day anymore because of the number of times I've almost stepped in human feces, and the needles strewn about.
8 years of liberal politicians claiming to care, and 8 years later it is significantly worse. I could excuse the lack of progress if the city government wasn't rolling in money the entire time. If they can't solve the problem with the way things were, they are going to have a hell of time doing it with the way they are headed.
Edit: I'd also like to point out society does not exist to gift every person peace, safety, and health. A just society offers opportunities, not guarantees.
- jason0597 6y ago> A just society offers opportunities, not guarantees. Tell that to the people who made a mistake when they were younger, got a criminal record, and are now vilified for the rest of their lives and are turned down from the vast majority of jobs. Is it any wonder you see those people turn to crime to make a living?
- BobbyJo 6y agoSounds like those people need more opportunities to me.

- BobbyJo 6y agoAn opportunity is enough, I'd politely decline :)
- Pet_Ant 6y agoAn opportunity isn’t a choice. It’s more of a dice roll, and you don’t get to see the number.
- BobbyJo 6y agoIt is by definition a chance to do something. If you don't get a choice, then you never had an opportunity.
- DSingularity 6y agoIf you think modern society provides equality of opportunity than you are delusional! There are those whom are born into wealth and those that are born into poverty. There are those who are born into college educated households and there are those who are born into high-school educated households. Some personalities are resilient enough to cope with the short end of the stick and others don’t know what hit them until they are 4 years behind — in math and science — those whom were born into better conditions. Go volunteer to tutor at-risk middle school students if you don’t believe me. Many of them can barely read. Do you think they have an equal opportunity to successful higher education in fields that are worth getting degrees in?
- BobbyJo 6y agoI come from poverty myself, and I couldn't agree more. I never said we are where we need to be. I was simply pointing out a difference in goals.
- bumby 6y ago>society does not exist to gift every person peace, safety, and health. Helping to guarantee things like physical safety is one of the fundamental parts of the social contract. Laws governing those areas are covered by the Constitution (depending on how you interpret “peace”)
