30k people a year in SF walk back to their car and see this
- fred_is_fred 6y agoAnd?
- uberman 6y agoI guess the point is that there are a lot of smash and grabs in SF. I'll add this to echo that. I have lived in a number of big cities in several countries and have never been the victim of a smash and grab until (or since) living in SF I where I averaged 5 a year. I had a jeep and I literally stopped putting the doors on it because even if I left my car unlocked, people would rather smash a window than even check if it was unlocked. SF has a lot of crazies, so I don't even know that theft was the motivation. I have seen people vandalize a car because it was the wrong brand or because it had a bumper sticker they apparently did not like.
- fred_is_fred 6y agoI was just trying to figure out why this was on my front page. There's no call to action, no analysis, just some rando's car with a broken window. I don't live in SF but my city has crime too. The link is a clickbait title as well which I found super annoying.
- uberman 6y agoYa, I agree it is kind of a random article. I'm guessing that because it is about crime in SF and SF being a kind of hub for tech, there is a natural draw here.
- hindsightbias 6y ago"But in March, when shelter-in-place began, vehicle break-ins dropped by 38% — with 1,040 incidents reported this year compared to 1,691 last year." https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Pandemic-hit-the-brakes-on-SF-s-car-break-in-15430323.php https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Pandemic-hit-the... Downtown, tourist areas suffer heavy predatory car robberies. Living near one, a summer weekend does not go by on my block with tourists being shocked leaving their laptops/luggage visible in SUV back's window didn't turn out well (smashers are in SUVs with right side passenger efficiently scanning while they drive by). Until tourists re-arrived in numbers last month, I hadn't seen a smashed window in 6 months. Have not seen a local car on my block of ~40 cars with a broken window in well over a year.
