I've had kind of the opposite idea: Use bitcoin mining to consume excess electricity. Excess electricity is already an issue in European grids and resulted in negative power prices (for example in April: https://www.cleanenergywire.org/factsheets/why-power-prices-turn-negative https://www.cleanenergywire.org/factsheets/why-power-prices-...). Rather than just heating water with the excess power, mining bitcoin during these times could be much more profitable.
