New settings for smart features and personalization in Gmail
- the_mitsuhiko 6y ago> The ability to turn on (or not) some of these individual smart features is not new. What’s new is a clearer choice over the data processing that makes them possible. This new setting is designed to reduce the work of understanding and managing that process, in view of what we’ve learned from user experience research and regulators’ emphasis on comprehensible, actionable user choices over data. I wonder what prompted this in particular. Did someone lodge a complaint about this feature or is this a proactive move?
- sigmaprimus 6y agoI'm not a big fan of hating on Google, but what exactly is the choice being offered? And is how is it new? Or is it just a new radio button pop up menu that is new and easier to use? The more interesting question I have after reading the email subjects in Jack Smith's Inbox is: Why would anyone have cookies and bread for dinner?
- pbasista 6y agoThis announcement is posted in the "Google in Europe" topic. Also, one of its paragraphs states: > That’s why our engineers at the Google Safety Engineering Center in Europe developed Privacy Checkup as an easy way to review key settings and see (and delete) the data that Google collects to provide you with helpful experiences. It seems to be an attempt to get explicit consent from users in Europe for further processing of their Gmail data. The UI of the dialogs which ask for this consent is specifically designed to discourage the user from not providing it. For example, if you choose an option to "Turn off smart features" you are presented with another dialog where you are asked whether you are sure and where you need to confirm this choice.
