- artemonster 6y ago96.7% of statistics are made-up on the spot.. and this is a very broad generalization.
- banachtarski 6y agoMaybe in your universe
- pc86 6y agoMost software is CRUD apps, because that's all that most companies need. Your small piece of the market might be different, and that's great and everything, but it's still just your small corner of a larger, mostly-CRUD universe.
- banachtarski 6y agoI'm not going to throw out a wildly inaccurate number, but based on pure market capitalization, I'm willing to bet the majority of software driving the primary products sold by companies globally is not just CRUD apps.
- atleta 6y agoYou may be both right, because you are talking about different things. The important thing is that most software being written is CRUD or at least can be served by pretty simple and standard tools and architecture. Even more accurately and more importantly from the perspective of this comment: most software developers will be working on such projects. And this is the gist, because a lot of folks talk about all these exotic/cool/cutting edge solutions while most people don't need or even should not to use them to get their job done.
- danielheath 6y agoDon't be ridiculous. 90% of software written is excel sheets. Perhaps 90% of the remainder is crud apps - that I could believe.
- argiopetech 6y agoFrom one point of view, Excel is a general purpose, schemaless CRUD environment with a DSL that allows you to encode your custom process and business logic.

- theshrike79 6y agoAlso disturbing amounts of our economy run on top of Excel sheets with macros and VBA. It's the one tool that is on every desktop in the company and doesn't need a 6 month procurement process. It might be shit, but it's there and it'll get the job done well enough.
- pc86 6y agoThe only thing more disturbing than running large segments of our economy on Excel and VBA would be running large segments of our economy on some untested Rust or Haskell library. If it's "shit" but it "get[s] the job done well enough" is it actually shit just because it's not being a Kubernetes cluster?
- theshrike79 6y agoThe "shit" part in excel is that there are very limited tools for automated testing and verification. There's no simple or standard way to tell that line 1138 of a 10k+ line excel sheet has a typo in the formula. Or check whether Excel has "helped" and changed some numbers to dates without telling anyone.
