How Sea Turtles Find Their Way
- blakesterz 6y agoThe title of this is "How Sea Turtles Find Their Way" It's an interesting read, spoiler: "Precisely where these now-endangered reptiles go, what route they take to get there, and how they navigate, is a mystery."
- firloop 6y agoHacker News' software automatically strips leading "How" from titles, to prevent clickbait presumably. I think it's probably fine to have it here though.
- bryanrasmussen 6y agoI assumed find their way was a reference to Jurassic Park and these Sea Turtles were going to be hermaphrodites fertilizing their own eggs or something like that.
- stevebmark 6y agoThis is a recurring reminder that Nautil.us is likely running an HN upvote ring to frontpage articles once a weekend. My original comment is here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24735050 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24735050 This same account (dnetesn) got this article to the front page this weekend. As of this comment, this article only has 3 comments, which is very low engagement relevant to other frontpage articles, which is the same pattern for other Nautil.us weekend frontpage articles. This turtle article is marginally more interesting than the article from my previous comment, but nothing you wouldn't find in a wikipedia page. Again, if this comment is against the rules, I will remove it. But I want to call out that this exactly fits the pattern of a low engagement article with mediocre content front paging on a weekend.
- Tenoke 6y agoIt has 5 upvotes which doesn't seem like much of a ring. More likely a mod is consistently promoting them or this person has just looked at the quietest times to post when it's most likely to reach the front page with few upvotes.
- headalgorithm 6y agoEven though dnetesn is John Steele from Nautilus, I don't think anything underhand is going on. This article was originally submitted yesterday, but was entered into the second chance queue.
