ARM based Linux server CPUs? Very likely.
Low end/ Chromebook style laptop ARM CPUs, Already exist.
Performant ARM CPUs designed for laptops? I expect you just gotta hope Windows on ARM takes off or start porting Linux to M1 Macs.
- cestith 6y agoWork has already begun to port Linux to M1 Macs. Linux for ARM and Windows for ARM are already running as PoC on the M1 Macs with QEMU (running ARM-on-ARM). https://www.techradar.com/news/you-can-now-run-linux-and-windows-on-the-m1-macs https://www.techradar.com/news/you-can-now-run-linux-and-win...
- ogre_codes 6y agoI suspect people interested in "superfast, supercool ARM-based Linux laptops" are looking more for running on bare metal, not in a VM.
- wmf 6y agoLinux on M1 bare metal is also in the works.
- the_af 6y agoIf Linux can be made to run on M1 bare metal, I expect it will. And computing history shows us Linux can be made to run on anything ;)
- ogre_codes 6y agoI expect (very much hope) it will. I haven't contributed to the Linux on M1 fund yet, but I am seriously considering it, particularly if I get an M1 Mac. I likely wouldn't run Linux until after Apple retires MacOS for the M1, but want the option.
- cestith 6y agoPlease read the first sentence again. Porting is underway. It's already running under ARM to ARM emulation, but porting is underway.
- the_af 6y ago> Performant ARM CPUs designed for laptops? I expect you just gotta hope Windows on ARM takes off or start porting Linux to M1 Macs. What makes you think Windows won't take off on ARM? In any case, if it can be done -- i.e. if there aren't locked down specs -- you can bet Linux will be ported to M1 Macs.
- ogre_codes 6y ago> What makes you think Windows won't take off on ARM? I have no idea if it will or not. Microsoft's current strategy on ARM seems pretty unlikely to succeed though. > In any case, if it can be done -- i.e. if there aren't locked down specs -- you can bet Linux will be ported to M1 Macs. I'm confident (and hopeful) we will see an M series Linux port. How good it will be without support from Apple is questionable. The current state of Linux on Mac doesn't exactly inspire hope.
- the_af 6y ago> Microsoft's current strategy on ARM seems pretty unlikely to succeed though I'm not familiar with Microsoft's current ARM strategy, but they can always pivot of it turns out it's really the future. I must reluctantly admit Microsoft has been capable of some pretty surprising and welcome changes in its history.
