Had Gollum been slain, justly or not, the Ringbearer’s quest would have failed. Not fate. Perhaps compassion. Perhaps mercy. Not, not happenstance.
To me, this seems like an important point in understanding the story. This may just be my own idiosyncratic opinion.
- db48x 6y agoBut it was unplanned, unless you buy the theory that Frodo had already ordered Gollumn to jump into Mt Doom if he betrays Frodo, and that this order is what caused Golummn to dance backwards towards the edge rather than dance in place.
