For my birthday I used to say that I REALLY don't want anything. Many people didn't respect the wish. So now I ask instead to donate to a foundation I selected, any amount, and only if they feel like donating. It works for everyone: me (finally not gifts), them (they feel they put their effort), and the good cause. Wouldn't work for Xmas, though. So I ask for drinks & edibles.
