Google Talk and AIM to Become Interoperable
- borski 16y agoOnline status for AIM will no longer be shown when connected via Google Talk. This really sucks.
- drivebyacct2 16y agoI know it sounds "get off my lawn"-ish, but I still can't believe people continue to use AIM.
- palish 16y agoWhy? Not only do people continue to use AIM -- entire companies use AIM. The last two game studios I worked at mandated this. Everyone in the company either already used AIM, or created a new account with the company initials as a prefix. Skype chat is superior, I agree. But AIM solves "the communication problem" just fine, too.
- simonsarris 16y agoHell, Cisco's messaging system was interoperable with AIM. Or it was, not sure if the new-new Webex one is.
- drivebyacct2 16y agoWhy on Earth would I prefer to use Skype? A bigger bloated more easily exploitable client? The only things I've used in GMail/Google Apps chat and IRC. I love IRC. I can private message people, we have rooms for different projects as well as idle chat area for random chit chat. I guess I just see AIM as really juvenile but that may have more to do with the gaudy AIM Windows clients.
- riffraff 16y agowhile I believe skype is bigger and bloated than most everything, you can easily have different rooms for different projects, idle chat area and private talks, with the advantage over IRC that they get synced when you come back online.
- pstack 16y agoThe preferred solution would probably be an internal Jabber/XMPP solution run within and by your own company that you controlled access to so that your communications (between employes or customers) don't run through another company and you can develop all sorts of nice little utilities that your employees can interact with through the protocol (like, access to general bug# information through simple queries). I would seriously question the integrity of any serious company's IT department if they just had everyone use AIM (the proprietary branded IM service -- not IM in general).
- ugh 16y agoYou might not have a choice depending on what other people you want to chat with are using.
- anonymoushn 16y agoDoes this mean that invisible will start working in google talk, or that invisible will stop working in AIM??
- Sniffnoy 16y agoI don't understand - does this mean that AIM is switching to XMPP? Or what?
- nextparadigms 16y agoNow they need to do the same with Skype(that rumored deal perhaps?).
