In Japan more people died from suicide last month than from Covid in all of 2020
- MilnerRoute 6y agoAren't there always a certain number of people who die from suicide? The real news here may be that Japan's done such a great job of reducing its Covid fatalities, that they've successfully lowered that number below whatever that ongoing baseline number of suicides has always been.
- pdkl95 6y ago> Aren't there always a certain number of people who die from suicide? Japan has had a high number of suicides for a long time. A revealing anomaly in the anual statistics explains one of the reasons: for people under age 18, there is a huge spike[1] in suicides on Sep 1 (the first day of school). Along with the usual high pressure for social conformity and academic success, children have been suffering a particularly bad bullying problem[2] in recent years.
