But the IBM PC XT and Macintosh of 1984 were orthogonal to each other already in the year of 1984. You argument would stand if the Macintosh and the XT were on par in 1984, but whey were not.
- raldi 6y agoThings weren't much better on Macs; it's just that on DOS, when things weren't working you would type a bunch of different command line options and then give up, whereas on a Mac you would just give up. I'm having 90's flashbacks to debugging nonworking printers and my girlfriend asking why, after many months since the installation, "is Netscape showing up as a hard drive"? And then there's "no, you just closed all the windows; you didn't close the app"
- ghaff 6y agoI was a DOS user at the time the Mac first came out and there were a few Macs around my grad school. My recollection is similar to yours. The fix on DOS might be something arcane related to config.sys files or whatever but if you banged at it long enough you could often (though certainly not always) get something to work eventually. Macs were more likely to just work out of the box. But if it didn't, you pretty much gave up because there was much less to twiddle with.
