Ryzen 5800u - on TSMC 5nm - might be better than M1, let's not forget the new generation of process that Apple has paid for.
- Synaesthesia 6y agoIt might be equal in CPU performance but the M1 has significantly better GPU perf, and also only uses 10W total!
- DCKing 6y agoThe Ryzen 5800U is all but confirmed to still be on TSMC 7nm. The Zen3 desktop counterparts are also still on 7nm. There's a good chance it'll be 2022 before we see AMD chips on 5nm unfortunately, almost certainly for mobile chips. Having said that, the 5800U might not be too far off the M1 in raw performance even on the older process. AMD's improvements on the same node for Zen3 are pretty good!
- hu3 6y agoAccording to Geekbench 5: AMD 5800U (7nm), single-core 1421, multi-core 6450 Apple M1 (5nm), single-core 1613, multi-core 6489 https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/compare/5021403?baseline=4977955 https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/compare/5021403?baselin... Note that a large part of the M1 multi-core score is due to advantages in Machine Learning and AES-XTS. Without those it would be behind AMD's processor and I don't see ML or AES being relevant for most users. Makes me wonder what will be AMD's 5nm performance.
- npunt 6y agoThat's a slow M1 machine, probably due to background tasks running shortly after setup. M1's are more like 1720-1750 single core, 7500-7600 multicore
- my123 6y agohttps://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/compare/5021923?baseline=4977955 https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/compare/5021923?baselin... You picked one of the odd outliers for the M1 (background activity running at the same time as the benchmark?).
- pram 6y agoThe best cherrypicking you could do still showed AMD losing. Why bother?
- socialdemocrat 6y agoRyzen narrowly beats M1 due to 60% higher clock frequency. Apple is avoiding clicking M1 that high to save power and reduce Heath. This at similar clock frequency and watt usage there would not be much competition. Ryzen would get destroyed.
