- hpkuarg 6y agoMount Pinatubo, in the Philippines, erupted in 1991 at VEI-6 (the same as Krakatoa in 1883), to similar artistic delight. Ken Rockwell has a series of photos[1] that beautifully illustrate the otherworldly quality of light that the particulates in the atmosphere created. - jet_32951 6y agoThe article notes the particles became differentiated by size during their long drift time, so perhaps the color differences come from Mie scattering?
